013 Louis McCoy x Jaime Brohier

This wonderfully subtle and moving collaboration between dj and musical curator Louis McCoy, and visual artist Jaime Brohier was recorded and created live at Cam’s Kiosk in November 2023 as part of our event ‘I’m not the body, I’m not even the mind’.

Creative work is more often than not, done in isolation with artists spending many hours in solitude. The collaborative process for Space Cast has always been remote with both artists often not meeting until the release is already out into the world. ‘I’m not the body, I’m not even the mind’ was our first ever event where the collaboration was created live in front of an audience. It’s a very tender and vulnerable moment to witness art unfold before your eyes, and to get a glimpse into the normally private, artists' process. It was wonderful to watch this gorgeous artwork and mix come to life at Cam’s Kiosk.

This collaboration pulls together two heavy hitters that we have been following from afar for quite some time. Jaime Brohier is the artist behind the visual response for this collaboration, an abstract artist whose work is mesmerising, full of colour and uniquely composed. Jaime creates a play between various mediums that are both cohesive and dissonant, forming works that are untethered, unplanned and innovative in their expression.

Jaime describes creating his work as a fluid stream of expression flowing out of him that celebrates imperfection. This process was so wonderfully exhibited previously for Theo Parrish’s ‘All Day Long’ show in Naarm / Melbourne which can now be found on the walls of High Note in Northcote.

Jaime’s process lends itself perfectly to this format of responding to a sonic medium and his response to Louis McCoys mix, which is titled ‘Only Ephemeral’, is subtle, watery, and dappled with the artist's distinct use of shapes, texture and composition.

Jaime Brohier created the work to a three hour long set from none other than Louis McCoy, a man much beloved by all for his prolific contribution to Australia’s music scene.

Louis’ audio résumé and reputation as a selector and curator precedes him. Louis has etched out his own audio space in the collective memory of Melbourne’s dance community as a founding member of Inner Varnika, and Common Ground, as well as the mind behind the legendary mix series, For Home Use Only

This long running project has featured some of Australia's most attuned musical minds. For Home Use Only features mostly long form sonic journeys that are immersive, meditative and sometimes transcendental, from dj's collections of what they love to play at home, and was a huge inspiration for this project as well. Big tip - #30 from Andy Hart, which has been a soundtrack to many many painting sessions in the studio for this writer.

Through many years of being exposed to such a wide array of different sounds through these various projects, Louis has developed that highly sought after skill of being able to furnish any context with the appropriate vibe, weaving through hip hop, ambient, trip hop, drum and bass, jungle, IDM or house and this talented has been exquisitely displayed in this 3 hour journey.

To celebrate the release of this collaboration we are having a special event at High Note in Northcote on Friday 2nd August, with a Q&A hosted by Amphi, featuring Jaime Brohier, Louis McCoy and Space Cast founder Bec Armstrong as well as dj sets from Louis, Amphi and Billus.

This Q&A will be recorded and will be available for listening back on Soundcloud shortly after the event.

You can listen to more of Louis Music on Soundcloud or follow his many projects on Instagram.

If you would like to support the artists you can purchase a limited edition print of ‘Only Ephemeral’, hand signed and numbered by the artist, or purchase a digital download of the mixtape.
